At age 29, pianist Chun Wang has already garnered acclaim as a promising artist. The Friends of Music in Durban, South Africa described his recital as “truly remarkable,” and his debut with the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra in 2010 was praised by the South African newspaper Beeld for “the full sound and magic he obtains from the Steinway to disclose the true French romanticism. . . One does not often hear a pianist with so many lyrical qualities in mostly lustful and powerful music.” As the first-prize winner of the 2018 Panama International Piano Competition, he performed Ravel’s Concerto in G Major with the National Symphony Orchestra of Panama at this year’s awards ceremony. He also received the Special Prize for the best interpretation of a Bach Toccata at the Competition.

Born in Fuzhou, China in 1990, Chun Wang began playing the piano when he was 5. After winning prizes in major national competitions, he entered the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing at age 13 for further studies. He completed his Master of Music degree with Robert McDonald at the Juilliard School in May 2015 and began his doctoral studies with Solomon Mikowsky at Manhattan School of Music the following September.

In his professional career, Chun Wang has performed at many famous venues such as Salle Cortot in Paris, Wigmore Hall in London, Sala Cecília Meireles in Rio de Janeiro, and Teatro Coliseo in Buenos Aires. He launched his career in Latin America after winning the Villa-Lobos Competition in São Paulo, Brazil in 2006, starting with several debut performances in Argentina and other South American countries in the following years, including a concerto appearance with Buenos Aires Philharmonic (Teatro Colon) Orchestra. In June 2016, he made his first appearance in Cuba with the National Symphony Orchestra in Havana. He later performed the same concerto at his New York orchestra debut in 2017 with MSM Symphony Orchestra, which received critical acclaim. He is also a laureate of major international contests such as the UNISA (University of South Africa) Competition in South Africa, the Villa-Lobos Competition in Brazil, the Grand Prix Animato in Paris, Jaén Competition in Spain, and Japan’s prestigious Hamamatsu Piano Competition. His first solo album, released in December 2018 by NAXOS, made the Top 50 Classical New Releases on Spotify playlist and was featured on BBC Radio 3.As a chamber music player, he appeared in the Bowdoin International Music Festival as the recipient of the Kaplan Fellowship in 2014 and 2016. In 2019, he was awarded as the resident artist at Telemann Festival in Magdeburg, Germany. He has collaborated with world-class musicians, such as Lewis Kaplan, Lucie Robert, and Charles Neidich. He also gives solo performances in the U.S., China, Japan, and Germany.
